An Iconic estate - Crawford river boasts some of the most elite Riesling and Cabernet in the country. Globally the concept of fine wine is based on families farming their prospective estates - and all throughout Europe and the 'Old World' there are examples of generations who have grown to understand their land and the varieties they produce. Australian wine production, as a younger industry, has a smaller amount of these families that should rightfully be championed. One such is the Thomson family, custodians of the famed Crawford River estate just North of Drumborg in the Henty region. First planted in 1975, outside of traditional wine growing areas at the time, John and Catherine Thomson were trailblazers of Riesling and Cabernet in part to their fierce determination, but also via global inspiration and an opportunistic vision. Now under the governance of second generation winemaker and viticulturalist Belinda, the Crawford River mentality focuses on a maintainence of natural systems without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides and has propelled the wines in both colours to the absolute pinnacle of Australian Wine. These are exceptional cool-climate expressions that are explicitly indicative of their place.
