Flute Mega Day is back for a full day of masterclasses, workshops, panel discussion, and a community concert finale that brings the whole flute family together. Led by Kathryn Moorhead, with special guests Joshua Batty, Liz Koch, Karen Fletcher, and Linda Pirie, this is a day designed for players at every stage: watch and learn from masterclasses; get hands-on in an interactive workshop building a brand-new massed-flute piece; hear real talk on exams, auditions, and careers from four of Adelaide's leading flute voices; and finish the day performing together in the massed flute concert. Whether you're a beginner, a school student prepping for exams, or a serious young player thinking about where flute could take you, there's something here for you. Schedule 9.00–9.15am — Welcome and Warm-Up Welcome to the day, introduction to our guest artist Joshua Batty, and a group warm-up. 9.15–9.55am — Masterclass: Emerging Flute Players Joshua Batty works with two young flautists from the Open Music Academy (OMA). 9.55–10.05am — Morning Break 10.05–10.45am — Breathing & Resonance with Joshua Batty An interactive group session exploring breathing and resonance in flute playing. 10.45–11.45am — Masterclass: University Flute Students Joshua Batty works with two flute students from the Elder Conservatorium of Music. 10.45–11.45am — Tutti Flutti Running concurrently with the university masterclass, Tutti Flutti offers younger flute players a friendly and supportive performance opportunity, presented by the Flute Society of South Australia. 11.45am–12.00pm — Altus Flutes Q&A 12.00–12.45pm — Lunch 12.45–1.20pm — Flute Unfiltered: Beyond the Notes A relaxed panel discussion with Elizabeth Koch, Karen Fletcher, Linda Pirie and Kathryn Moorhead exploring practice, exams, auditions, performance, common misconceptions, career pathways and studying music beyond school. 1.25–2.10pm — From Notes to Music An interactive workshop led by Kathryn Moorhead. Bring your flute! We’ll explore how sound, dynamics, articulation, colour, character and musical direction can transform even the simplest notes into music. We’ll finish by creating a massed-flute piece for players of all levels, which will return as the finale of the Community Flute Concert. 2.10–2.20pm — Short Break 2.20–3.00pm — From Good to Excellent: Preparing for an AMEB Exam Linda Pirie draws on her extensive experience as a teacher and AMEB examiner to explore the details that can make the difference between a good exam performance and an excellent one. 3.00–3.15pm — Break & Concert Set-Up 3.15–4.00pm — Community Flute Concert A celebration of flute playing featuring local school flute ensembles and Adelaide Symphony players Julia Grenfell and Lisa Gill. The concert concludes with everyone joining together for our massed-flute finale — so bring your flute and be part of it!
