AHS Simulation Debriefing Development Series Module 2: "Growing in Debriefing" Your Facilitators: Prof Walter Eppich and Dr Ben Symon Designed for: Debriefers who have completed the introductory module and are beginning to develop their facilitation skills. This blended learning program combines online preparation with a full-day, face-to-face workshop focused on skill development and deliberate practice. Building on the foundations established in Module 1, participants explore learning theories that underpin debriefing, apply structured debriefing models, and practise advanced facilitation techniques such as the use of silence, distillation, and purposeful questioning. A key feature of this course is the opportunity for real-time practice, feedback, and introduction to meta-debriefing. Participants leave with greater confidence in facilitating learner-centred debriefs and a deeper appreciation of the deliberate techniques that support meaningful reflection and learning. Developing Excellence in Debriefing Practice Effective debriefing practice is central to effective simulation-based education. Whether you're facilitating your first debrief or looking to refine an established practice, the Adelaide Health Simulation (AHS) Debriefing Development Series provides a structured pathway to support your growth as a debriefer. The program is built around three progressive stages - Discovery, Growth, and Maturity - reflecting the natural development of debriefing knowledge, skills, and expertise. Together, these three courses create a connected learning journey. Participants begin by exploring the foundations of effective debriefing, progress to developing practical facilitation skills through guided practice and feedback, and ultimately advance towards the nuanced judgement, adaptability, and educational leadership associated with expert debriefing practice. At each stage, learners are supported to build confidence, deepen their capability, and enhance their impact as simulation educators. A Connected Learning Journey The three modules of the AHS: Simulation Debriefing Development Series are intentionally designed to build upon one another. ‘Discovering Debriefing’ establishes foundational knowledge and common language (undertaken online prior to Module 2). Module 2 ‘Growing in Debriefing’ develops capability through practice, feedback, and reflection; and Module 3 ‘Maturing as a Debriefer’ focuses on expertise, adaptability, and professional leadership in debriefing. Collectively, the pathway supports healthcare educators to develop from novice debriefers to skilled facilitators capable of delivering psychologically safe, learner-centred, and educationally impactful debriefing experiences across a range of simulation and healthcare contexts.
