Creating a Productive Summer Veggie Garden

From kang kong to cassava there's so many veggies that we can grow during Brisbane's summer. Many people say that they can’t grow vegies through the heat, humidity and wet of over the summer months. Usually, this is because they try to keep growing the traditional varieties that only grow well in the cooler, drier part of the year. In this introductory workshop, Brisbane master gardener Dick Copeman will show you the huge variety of delicious tropical vegetable plants that are well adapted to the warmer and wetter part of the year in SEQ. During this workshop, you will: • get tips on propagating, planting, caring for and harvesting a range of summer sub-tropical vegies • be provided with a recipe sheet for preparing and cooking some of the lesser-known varieties • tour our gardens and nursery to look at the tropical vegetables on display. Youth Offer This workshop is available to teenagers (12 to 18 years) accompanied by mum, dad or an adult guardian who have also paid to attend the workshop. About the Facilitators Dick Copeman has been a medical doctor, environmental activist and permaculturalist. He helped found Northey Street City Farm in Brisbane in 1994 and initiated Northey Street’s permaculture design certificate training courses. His particular interests are in garden ecology, permaculture design, tree and perennial crops, bush regeneration, bush foods and food preparation. Lizzie Gallagher is an experienced horticulturist and sustainability professional with a Diploma of Horticulture and leads the operations and development of City Farm Nursery at Northey Street City Farm. She was awarded a Horticultural Academic Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement and is a recipient of a Queensland Community Achievement Award recognising the success of City Farm Nursery. Lizzie works with the Nursery team to grow and curate an extensive range of organic seeds, seasonal vegetable seedlings, culinary and medicinal herbs, bush tucker plants, fruit trees and native plants, while sharing practical gardening advice based on organic gardening and permaculture principles. She also collaborates with the Northey Street City Farm team to deliver engaging education programs that inspire people to grow food, care for the environment and build resilient communities.
