Dots+Loops WALK CLUB #5

WALK CLUB is a collective exploration of the distinctive and ever-changing sounds of our surroundings — an invitation to deepen our connection to place. On each artist-curated soundwalk route, be guided through listening activities and creative reflection that turn our attention to the sonic environments around us. Sunday 27 September, 4.30pm ft. Roman MC where // Orleigh Park, West End meeting point // near the Hill End Terrace playground For this month’s walk, we return to Orleigh Park in West End to experience it during a different time of day and year. We will be guided by Roman MC, a freestyle MC, storyteller and front man for local favourites BULLHORN and Life On Earth. We will ground ourselves by the river before walking along the park to visit the site of a sonic phenomenon that is one of Roman’s favourite rituals in Brisbane. Expect to hear the sound of light traffic from the road, evening exercisers, a sunset chorus of birds and insects, and the lapping of the river at low tide. Route and Accessibility Meet at 4:30pm in Orleigh Park, West End, near the Hill End Terrace playground with the SWAY FUN accessible swing. There is street parking along the length of the park and on surrounding streets. Orleigh Park is serviced by the 60, 192 and 199 buses, and the CityCat Ferry. We will be walking for about 2.5km over 60 minutes, with several stops along the way and activities at the beginning and end. The route includes gentle slopes and uneven ground along well-maintained grassy/off-path areas. The sun will have set by the conclusion of the walk. What To Bring Wear comfortable close toed shoes, please bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and maybe a snack. If you’re like, bring a field-recording device (like a ZOOM), a notebook or sketch pad, or any other creative listening/reflecting tools you would like! What Is A Soundwalk? A soundwalk is a walk with a focus on listening to the environment. Canadian composer, radio artist and sound ecologist Hildergard Westerkamp defines a soundwalk as “... any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment. It is exposing our ears to every sound around us no matter where we are.” This term was first widely used in the 1970s in Vancouver by Westerkamp and other members of the World Soundscape Project, but we recognise that many similar practices exist, including First Nations practices of walking Country and listening to Country (eg. dadirri). Soundwalks offer a way for us to re-engage with our surroundings, and can foster a sense of community and belonging, as well as inspire and generate material for art-making. Tickets Participation is FREE, but please make sure you register, as places on each walk are limited.
