About the Book Korean Youth Migration to Australia: A Human Security Perspective - Springer & Amazon This book is the first of its kind in English to discover the first Korean immigrant who landed in Australia in 1876, and to systematically analyse causes of Korean youth migration to Australia from a human security perspective. Jay Song analyses extensive data from the Australian national archives, immigration as well as her own national surveys of 1,000 contemporary Korean Australians and fieldwork interviews. Each chapter begins with an individual story of youth migration to Australia from 1876 until today. Amongst those include the first Korean who worked as a shearer and miner in outback Australia, the first Korean international student who studied in Melbourne, a former mascot boy for Australian soldiers and contemporary holiday makers in Warrnambool. The study, funded by the Australian Research Council and the Academy of Korean Studies, provides stimulating content for researchers in youth labour migration history, Asian/Australian Studies and people-centric international relations. About the Author Jay Song is Honorary Associate Professor at Australian National University, specialised in migration and human rights. Prior to her current position, she was Korea Foundation Associate Professor in Korean Studies at the University of Melbourne and Director of Migration Policy at the Lowy Institute in Sydney. Before settling in Australia, Jay held various professional positions in multiple countries, including the UN Consultant for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva; Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute for International Affairs in London; Fellow of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs in New York; and Press Secretary for a member of the National Assembly in Seoul. Jay finished her PhD in Politics and International Relations from the University of Cambridge, UK.
