Fish, Frogs & Finding Love: The Hidden Lives of Wetland Wildlife

Led by biologist Dr Diego de Moura Campos, this Jerrabomberra Wetlands walk will introduce you to the surprising world of sexual selection among aquatic life – exploring how evolution has shaped the spectacular colours, forms and behaviours animals use to find mates and survive. Together, we’ll uncover some of the fascinating biodiversity found in Canberra's wetland ecosystems and explore how Australian species are responding to threats such as habitat change and invasive species. Canberra Environment Centre's Queer Trails and Tales is a series of six guided nature walks celebrating Canberra’s landscapes, wildlife and biodiversity through a queer lens. Led by local experts, each walk brings together science, storytelling and community to explore the fascinating diversity of the natural world. Read more about the whole program here: https://www.canberraenvironment.org/queer-trail-tales Learn about Dr Diego de Moura Campos Dr Diego de Moura Campos is a biologist and science educator whose research has explored animal ecology and evolution, particularly how environmental conditions shape the biology and behaviour of animals. During his master’s degree, Diego studied the dynamics of a fungal disease affecting small poisonous frogs in the Brazilian rainforest. For his PhD, he expanded his research into sexual selection, investigating how environmental change influences the development and expression of sexual characteristics in fish. Diego now works as a science and biology teacher in the ACT, combining his research experience with his passion for science education. Equipment needed N/A Safety considerations We recommend participants wear comfortable, close-toed, flat-soled shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Please bring water and adequate sun protection, including a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Light refreshments will be provided following the walk.
