Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial will test more than the vice president’s political survival. It could reshape the Marcos–Duterte rivalry, redraw alliances, and transform the race for the presidency in 2028. This lecture examines how electoral mandates, institutional constraints, and elite strategies interact, drawing comparisons with impeachment experiences in Asia and other young democracies. It then assesses conviction, acquittal, and procedural stalemate as competing political scenarios, considering their consequences for public mobilization, dynastic competition, and the 2028 presidential election. What would make impeachment strengthen democratic accountability rather than merely redistribute power among rival dynastic elites?
