The Sound of My Land: English-Spanish Storytelling, Music and Art Workshop

Join us for The Sound of My Land, a fun in-person workshop mixing stories, tunes, and art in two languages! The Sound of My Land: English-Spanish Storytelling, Music & Art Workshop Join GLAM – Geelong Latin American Movement for a free and engaging family workshop celebrating Latin American culture through storytelling, music, rhythm, movement, puppets, art and play. As part of Children’s Week 2026, this special two-hour experience invites children aged 0–12 years and their parents or carers to enjoy a fun and welcoming morning where English and Spanish come together. 🎶 Music & Rhythm Workshop with Colombian Musician Wilson Melo A special highlight of the event will be the music and rhythm workshop led by Wilson Melo, a Colombian percussionist and musician. Wilson will invite children and families to discover the joy of rhythm through percussion, body movement, clapping and interactive musical games. Participants will explore simple rhythms and Spanish words such as *sol* and *luna*, while developing listening, coordination, movement and teamwork skills. Through this fun and engaging experience, Wilson will share the energy and spirit of Latin American music, creating an opportunity for children and families to connect with culture through rhythm, movement and music. 📚 English-Spanish Storytelling & Puppets Families will enjoy a storytelling session inspired by Waiting for the Biblioburro by Monica Brown and John Parra. Presented in English and Spanish, the story will be brought to life through puppets and GLAM volunteers. Children will follow Ana, a young girl in rural Colombia, and discover themes of books, imagination, culture and the importance of access to stories. ⭕ Music, Movement & Hoop Games Children and adults will take part in fun movement activities involving rhythm, clapping, walking, simple musical patterns and a hoop pathway game. These activities encourage communication, coordination, listening, cooperation and teamwork. 🎨 Creative Art Activity Children will decorate a small eco-resin figure with a magnet to take home as a special keepsake from the day. 🍎 Free Healthy Snack for Children Children will also enjoy a free healthy snack during the event. ❤️ A Celebration of Culture & Community This workshop is an opportunity for Latin American families to celebrate their language and cultural heritage, while welcoming families from the wider Geelong community. Through music, storytelling, Spanish language, movement and art, children and families can connect with one another, make new friends and experience the richness of Latin American culture in a warm and inclusive environment.
