AI for Decision Makers: Mental Models for Strategy Risk and Governance

Session Overview AI is often described either as a black box capable of producing remarkable results, or as a highly complex technical system wrapped in specialist jargon. Neither framing is especially useful for senior leaders who need to make decisions about strategy, risk, governance and organisational change. What we now call “AI” is an emerging technology. We have seen emerging technologies before, and we can use what we already know about them to anticipate how AI may develop. Emerging technologies create change, and change creates winners and losers. The winners are not necessarily the brightest, the fastest or the most technically advanced. They are the organisations best able to apply the right strategy. This talk introduces practical mental models for thinking about AI at the strategic level. Rather than focusing on technical detail or short-term hype, it explores how decision makers can understand what AI is, where its value and risks arise, and how familiar principles of management, governance and accountability can guide AI adoption. The aim is to help leaders move beyond simplistic metaphors and think about AI as a strategic capability. Participants will take away practical mental models for thinking about AI at a strategic level. The session is designed for decision-makers who do not need to manage technical implementation, but who do need to make informed decisions about AI strategy, risk, governance, assurance and organisational adoption.
