Full description from organizerShow less
In 1959, C. P. Snow delivered his seminal lecture The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution, in which he expressed deep concern about the state of Western intellectual life. He pointed to a widening chasm between humanists and scientists, arguing that their mutual incomprehension and lack of dialogue threatened the ability of modern states to address the world's biggest problems. This intellectual concern triggered a push toward new forms of cultural synthesis. Engineers from leading institutions and laboratories, such as MIT, Caltech, and Bell Labs, enthusiastically collaborated with the most prominent artists of the time, including John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and others. Together, they explored the creative potential of emerging technologies, producing innovative multimedia visual and acoustic works. Tracing this trajectory from early 1960s initiatives to the most impactful experiments in Art, Science & Technology, this lecture will explore how the convergence of these two cultures transcended mistrust and incomprehension, serving as a catalyst for commercial innovation and cultural transformation. Details: • Date: Friday 23 October, 4pm to 5pm • Venue: Newton Room (201), Level 2, Electrical & Electronic Engineering Building (193), Parkville, The University of Melbourne • Format: In-person • Cost: Free This event is part of a Culture of Experimentation series, held over a few separate dates. The series explores the fascinating history, challenges, and methodologies of interdisciplinary collaboration across art, science, and engineering, and reveals how encounters between these fields have become a blueprint for new forms of knowledge synthesis and a driving force behind contemporary creative culture.
