A Hands-On Broadcast Studio Skills Session for Teachers. This PD provides teachers with an opportunity to experience Media Impact – Breaking News. Working within a broadcast studio environment, teachers will explore the processes and technologies used to create television news bulletins while developing an understanding of how the program supports media literacy, communication and collaborative learning. Participants will gain hands-on experience using our studio and control room equipment, including cameras, vision mixing, audio production and autocue systems. The session also provides insights in how authentic media production experiences can be used to engage students in critical thinking, storytelling, digital technologies and contemporary media practices. Designed for educators across a range of learning areas, this workshop offers both technical skill development and reflection into how our programs can connect to classroom learning and curriculum outcomes. It’s also great fun! Program Objectives: · Develop an understanding of the structure and production processes of a television news broadcast. · Upskill with hands-on experience with broadcast studio and control room technologies. · Explore media literacy concepts including audience, purpose, credibility and representation. · Experience the collaborative roles involved in planning and producing a news bulletin. · Understand how the this supports student learning in communication, creativity, teamwork and digital technologies. · Build confidence in facilitating and connecting authentic media production experiences to classroom practice. Aim To provide teachers with practical experience in television news production and broadcast technologies while exploring the educational value of media production as a tool for developing media literacy, communication skills and collaborative learning. Objectives By the end of the session, participants will: · Understand the key components and workflow of a television news production. · Identify and upskill in a range of studio and control room roles. · Have the opportunity to operate core broadcast technologies including cameras, audio systems, vision mixing and autocue equipment. · Apply communication techniques including presentation, interviewing and adlib scripts. · Analyse how news content is constructed and communicated to audiences. · Reflect on opportunities to connect media production experiences to curriculum outcomes and classroom practice. · Develop familiarity with the learning experiences students undertake during our Breaking News program. Program Outline Time Session Content & Activities 9:00 – 9:30 Arrival & Registration - A welcome coffee and tour of facility 9:30 – 9:45 Program Start: Welcome and overview - Roadmap to the workshop - Identify production roles on screen and behind the scenes. - Discuss what makes news engaging and professional. - Introduce the concept of a live news bulletin. 9:45 – 10:30 Skills Tutorial & Role Allocation - Learn the responsibilities of studio and control room roles. - Demonstration / tutorial of cameras, ATEM vision mixer, audio desk, autocue and lighting. - Learn Switching Cameras to switch virtual newsroom / remote location backgrounds. - Role Allocation Assign participants to crew and presenter roles. - Introduce newsroom scenarios and reporting locations. 10:45am - 11.00am Morning Tea 15 minutes 11:00am - 12.15pm Full Rehearsal - Allocate students to production and presenting teams. Practise anchor and reporter scripts using the autocue. - Operate cameras, vision switching and audio controls. - Rehearse live crosses between anchors and field reporters. - Rotate participants through key studio and control room roles. - Complete a full rehearsal news bulletin. 12:15am - 12.45pm Lunch 30 minutes 12:45pm - 2.45pm Live Record - Produce and record a complete news bulletin. Deliver anchor desk introductions and news updates. - Perform multiple live crosses to on-location reporters. - Operate all production equipment collaboratively. - Record the finished broadcast. - Upload final live to tape video to cloud. 2:45pm - 3.00pm Review/Reflect - Watch the completed news broadcast. - Discuss successes and challenges in production. Reflect on teamwork, communication and technical skills. - Identify one new skill learned during the program On arrival, leave your car registration details with the front desk for free parking and help yourself to tea and coffee. We will introduce the staff who will be looking after you for the day and provide a tour of our amazing space (if time permits).
