A practical workshop to help you identify vulnerabilities, improve your home security and develop a realistic safety plan for your family. How safe is your home when you're actually in it? Most of us give some thought to home security. We lock the doors, perhaps have cameras or an alarm, and assume we'll work out what to do if something ever happens. But what if someone is trying to get into your home? What if you hear breaking glass in the middle of the night? Where is your phone? Where are your children or other family members? Can you safely leave? Is there somewhere secure you can move to? And does everyone in your household know the plan? The middle of an emergency is the wrong time to make your first plan. The Conflict Ready Home Safety Workshop is a practical three-hour session designed to help everyday people take a realistic look at their home, identify potential vulnerabilities and develop sensible strategies to protect themselves and the people they care about. This is not about fear, paranoia or turning your home into a fortress. Nor is it a martial arts or fighting seminar. It's about prevention, preparation and having options. What we'll cover... The workshop follows the Conflict Ready Home Safety framework: 1. Deter & Detect — Become a hard target We'll look at your home through the lens of environmental awareness, including property vulnerabilities, approaches and access, surveillance and pre-incident indicators, routines, occupancy cues and simple measures that may make your home less attractive to an offender. 2. Delay & Deny — Hold the line If prevention fails, time becomes valuable. We'll explore layered security, creating obstacles, safe-room principles, movement within the home, family roles, escape routes, contacting Triple Zero (000) and practical ways to delay or deny access. 3. Defend — Last resort Physical force should not be your first or only response. We'll discuss avoidance, de-escalation, distance, barriers, escape, the importance of protecting life over property, and the considerations involved when there is no safe alternative but to protect yourself or someone else. 4. Welfare & Recovery — After the incident We'll also consider what happens afterwards: checking everyone's safety, first aid, dealing with police, preserving evidence, restoring security, insurance, family welfare and returning safely to normal routines. A practical workshop — not just a presentation You'll be actively involved throughout the session. One of the first exercises will be mapping your own home and establishing its “before state” — what security measures already exist, where potential vulnerabilities may be, and how your household currently approaches safety. We'll then challenge you to change perspective and look at your home from the outside in. As the workshop progresses, you'll revisit that initial assessment and begin developing a personalised Home Safety Plan for your own circumstances. The aim is simple: You don't just leave with information. You leave with a plan — and greater confidence in your ability to use it. Your Presenters Paul Veldman - Founder, Conflict Ready & Kando Martial Arts Paul served for 17 years with Victoria Police, with specialist experience in conflict management, operational safety and critical incidents. One of his roles was as a Forced Building Entry Instructor, and he participated in dozens of operational building entries. A significant part of that work occurred before anyone went through a door - assessing properties, approaches, access and entry points, obstacles, risks and contingencies. Combined with over 30 years as a martial arts instructor and trainer, Paul brings extensive experience in conflict management, personal safety and self-protection. For this workshop, he turns some of that operational thinking around to help participants assess their own homes from the other side of the equation. Justin Qubrosi - Head Instructor & Co-Founder, Kando Highett Justin has more than 20 years of combined martial arts experience and specialises in practical, pressure-tested self-protection and decision-making under stress. A 4th Dan in Kando, Justin also holds a 1st Dan in Kinetic Fighting – Integrated Combat under former Commando Paul Cale, a 3rd Dan with Jissen Budo International, and trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing and edged-weapons systems. Since 2019, he has delivered seminars covering survivability, applied self-protection and edged-weapon defence, as well as women's awareness programs. Justin's approach focuses on bridging the gap between traditional martial arts and real-world personal protection - from pre-incident awareness and recognising danger through to effective decision-making and action under pressure. Together, Paul and Justin will take participants through a practical approach to home and family safety built around prevention, preparation and response, not fear.
