New North 19: Jack Palmer & Ensemble 'Imprints' / Sia Ahmad

New North Concert 19 7:30pm Wednesday 25th November Brunswick Mechanics Institute (270 Sydney Road Brunswick 3056) LINEUP: Jack Palmer & Ensemble: 'Imprints' Composer/video artist/performer Jack Palmer present Imprints, a new work for percussion ensemble, electronics and 3d models. Featuring Ollie Cox, Zela Papageorgiou, Hamish Upton, and Michael McNab. Imprints systematically twists and turns through 24 scenes that bring together projections of 3d models and sound. It is a journey into the Ālaya-vijñāna itself. Lifeless, yet familiar objects spin in a dimensionless void, unlocated and decontextualised, they are open conduits for meaning and sensation which is activated and energised by percussion and electronics. In this process, the aural is ‘imaged’ and a symbolic logic emerges, fragmented and opaque, like a dream that you can’t quite remember. Photo credit: Darren Gill Sia Ahmad With a rich and extensive background in Australian music, Sia Ahmad has been creating idiosyncratic sounds over the last decade and more. Using guitar, keyboard, voice and electronics, she works both as singer/composer and improviser, when performing solo, as Shoeb Ahmad, as well as collaborative projects. She has released a diverse range of original music while also working on sound design for dance/theatre, installation pieces and contemporary chamber composition, inspired by 20th-century avant-classical works, Indian raga form and minimalist electronic music. She has performed throughout Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and South Eastern Asia as a solo artist, and with acclaimed groups such as Sensaround, Spartak, Tangents and the Australian Art Orchestra. shoebahmad.bandcamp.com Photo credit: Jordan Kirk ABOUT NEW NORTH Join the mailing list: tinyurl.com/nnmailinglist New North is a platform for Narrm/Melbourne-based musicians who push boundaries in their areas of practice.
