In Memoriam - Pop-culture trivia

Night of the Dead: In Memoriam is a joyful, slightly spooky pop-culture trivia night celebrating the people, and a few other things, that are no longer with us. I’m heading to Mexico in mid-October, which means I won’t be here to celebrate Halloween this year. So this night is part early Halloween send-off, part chance to see you all before I go, and partly inspired by the spirit of Día de Muertos: remembering those who have died through stories, music, colour and celebration. This isn’t intended to be a traditional Día de Muertos event, but a playful and affectionate celebration of the people who have contributed so much to our lives and popular culture. The tone will be much more festive than funereal. What to expect This will be a very pop-culture-heavy night of trivia, featuring: • Movies and television • Music, including a couple of music rounds • Literature and famous characters • Picture rounds • Beloved celebrities and pop-culture icons we’ve lost • Other people, places and things that are no longer with us There will be basically zero sport, with very little history, geography or politics. You absolutely do not need to be a serious trivia person, the questions are designed to get your team talking, laughing and dredging up half-forgotten pieces of pop-culture knowledge together. There will be prizes for the trivia winners and, quite possibly, a prize for the best dressed. Dress code (entirely optional) Come dressed: • In black • As a favourite celebrity who has passed • As something, or someone, dead • In Halloween or Día de Muertos-inspired colour • Or simply as yourself We’ll also have a small commemorative altar where you can light a candle for someone you would like to remember. Coming alone or with friends? As always, you’re very welcome to come by yourself. We’ll help place solo attendees and smaller groups onto friendly teams, generally with around four to six people per table. You can also bring a friend, a date, several friends or an already assembled trivia supergroup. The emphasis is on having a fun, structured way to socialise, not intense competition. The practical details Doors open: 6:30 pm Trivia begins: 7:00 pm Duration: Approximately three hours Venue: Uniting Church Hall, Northcote Tickets: $10 BYO dinner, snacks and drinks. Alcohol is permitted, and the venue has a fully stocked kitchen available for us to use. Come raise a glass, light a candle and celebrate the people who may be gone—but who have left us with some excellent trivia questions.
