In this workshop, we’ll start with bamboo weaving. You’ll learn the technique step by step as your fan takes shape, then add your own decorative touches to make it feel like yours. Choose a look you love, enjoy the process, and take home a fan you’ll be proud to use. There’s room to slow down, try something new and have a chat around the making table. If your first few weaves take a little practice, you’ll be in good company! What You Will Experience In this Sinology Studio hands-on workshop, we’ll welcome Perth’s warmer days by making a fan of our own, inspired by the traditional Chinese craft of bamboo weaving. Known in Chinese as zhúbiān (竹编), bamboo weaving uses thin strips of bamboo to create objects that are both useful and beautiful. From everyday baskets to decorative fans, the craft brings together patient hands, simple materials and intricate patterns. In this workshop, you’ll start by weaving your fan, following the pattern as it gradually takes shape. Then comes the playful part: decorating it in your own style. Each fan will be a little different, and yours will be ready to take home for the sunny days ahead. No experience is required. Come enjoy a slow afternoon of making, creativity and connection. Workshop Activities • Discover the art: Begin with a short introduction to bamboo weaving, a traditional Chinese craft used to make practical and decorative objects, including fans. • Learn the weave: Get familiar with the bamboo strips and practise the weaving pattern we’ll use, with guidance along the way. • Weave your fan: Work the bamboo strips into a fan shape and watch the pattern emerge, one weave at a time. • Add the finishing touches: Finish the edge with fabric binding, choose a tassel, then decorate your fan with an embroidered patch or pearls. • Share the moment: Admire everyone’s creations and take home a handmade fan ready for Perth’s warmer days.
