Create your own cloisonné-inspired enamel coasters, then gather around the table for tea, mooncakes and a relaxed Mid-Autumn celebration About the workshop Mid-Autumn is a time for coming together in China - sharing food, tea and conversation under the same full moon. Inspired by this tradition of togetherness, our September workshop invites you to create a set of decorative coasters using a contemporary, beginner-friendly interpretation of Chinese cloisonné enamel art. A coaster may be a small everyday object, but it holds a place at the table for every cup, every guest and every conversation. Whether used during a quiet tea at home or brought out when friends visit, your finished coasters can become part of many future moments shared together. What You Will Experience In this Sinology Studio hands-on workshop, we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival through the traditional art of cloisonné enamel. Known in China as jingtailan (景泰蓝), cloisonné is a decorative enamel technique celebrated for its delicate metal outlines and vivid, jewel-like colours. Traditionally, artisans shaped fine metal wires into intricate patterns before filling each enclosed section with enamel glaze, firing it and polishing the surface. In this workshop, the detailed outlines will already be prepared for you. You’ll focus on selecting your own palette and slowly filling each section with rich, enamel-style colour to create a design that feels entirely your own. Once our coasters are complete, we’ll gather around the table to enjoy tea and mooncakes and share a little Mid-Autumn celebration together. No experience is required. Just bring your curiosity and enjoy a slow afternoon of culture, creativity, tea, and connection. Workshop Activities • Discover the art: Begin with a simple introduction to Chinese cloisonné enamel - its history, traditional process and distinctive combination of delicate metal lines and luminous colour. • Choose your palette: Explore different colour combinations and create a palette that feels personal to you, from traditional jewel tones to softer contemporary shades. • Fill your designs: The intricate outlines will already be prepared, so you can focus on the most calming and expressive part of the process: carefully filling each enclosed section with rich, enamel-style colour. • Add the finishing touches: Refine the colours and details of your coaster set, bringing each design together with guidance throughout the process. • Gather around the table: Finish the afternoon with tea and mooncakes as we celebrate Mid-Autumn, admire everyone’s creations and share a slow moment around the table. Visit our website to experience Chinese traditions through hands-on workshops and more cultural stories. What You'll Take Home • Your own handmade set of cloisonné-inspired enamel coasters • An introduction to the history and beauty of Chinese cloisonné enamel • A meaningful piece for your own table or to bring out when friends and family gather • A memory of an afternoon spent making, sharing and celebrating together
