This Cantonese family workshop is more than just a chance for children to “learn Chinese”. Through stories, music, games and sensory activities, children can experience Cantonese naturally in a fun and relaxed environment, while parents learn simple and practical strategies to support Chinese language learning in everyday life. The workshop will be led by bilingual Speech Pathologist Denise, together with our collaborating partners. During the storytime, Denise will demonstrate shared book-reading strategies and share practical ways to support bilingual language development. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What’s included 🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Who is this event for? Children aged 3–8 years and their families Families with all levels of Cantonese are welcome. This workshop is also ideal for parents who would like to learn more about supporting their child’s Cantonese and bilingual language development in everyday life in Australia. 📖 Cantonese Storytime Denise will lead a shared reading session featuring original picture books from Hong Kong. Besides enjoying the stories together, parents will learn some simple shared book-reading strategies that they can try at home straight away. 🎵 Music × Movement Early childhood teacher, Faye will lead Cantonese songs, music and movement activities, giving children another fun and natural way to experience Cantonese through sounds, rhythm and movements. 🎨 Chinese Language Games × Sensory Play Children will explore Chinese and Cantonese through games and sensory activities designed by Faye. Parents will also take away ideas for creating similar activities at home to continue the language learning. ☕ Refreshments × Parent Sharing Denise will share practical information with parents about: • The shared book-reading strategies demonstrated during storytime and how to use them at home • How to support your child’s bilingual language development in everyday life • Signs to look out for in your child’s speech, language and communication development • When you may consider seeking advice from a speech pathologist We hope parents bring home not only information about bilingual development, but also practical strategies they can start using at home immediately. 💬 Q&A × Chinese Book Fair The event will finish with an informal Q&A and chat, where parents can ask Denise questions about children’s language, communication and bilingual development.
