Full description from organizer

For centuries, the mountainous region of Hakkari was home to flourishing Assyrian communities whose villages, churches, monasteries and tribal districts formed a distinctive cultural landscape. Join us for Hakkari Explained: Mapping Assyrian Landscapes & Heritage, a special lecture presented by Dr Nicholas Al-Jeloo, exploring the historical geography of one of the most significant regions of the Assyrian homeland. Through maps, historical sources and geographical research, Dr Al-Jeloo will guide audiences through the landscapes of Hakkari, examining its Assyrian settlements, tribal territories, valleys, mountain ranges, churches, monasteries and important historical sites. The lecture will explore how geography influenced community life, identity and the relationships between the different districts and tribes of Hakkari, while helping audiences better understand where ancestral villages and regions were situated within the wider landscape. Beyond the names found on a map, this lecture offers an opportunity to reconnect places with the communities, histories and memories that gave them meaning, preserving knowledge of a landscape from which much of the Assyrian population was displaced during the upheavals of the early twentieth century. The evening will also provide an opportunity for attendees to engage with Dr Al-Jeloo and ask questions about the geography, history and heritage of Hakkari. Date: Wednesday, 16 September 2026 Time: 6:30 PM Venue: ANCA Office, 7/39–41 Harris Street, Fairfield NSW 2165
