About this event

Join Matt Dodds for a hands-on workshop focused on the Fundamentals of Mechanics, aligned with the new NSW Physics Syllabus. Participants explore concepts such as gravity, Newton's Second Law, friction, and momentum through practical experiments, enhancing their teaching methods in physics.

Full description from organizer

Join Matt Dodds to learn about all things Fundamentals of Mechanics as it relates to syllabus outcomes from the new NSW Physics Syllabus (2025). This Physics workshop is practical in nature, and requires the use of a laptop with Microsoft Excel for data collection and analysis. This in person Fundamentals of Mechanics workshop can be logged as 5 Hours of Elective Professional Development and Certificates will be emailed to attendees after the course has been completed. Their is an option to purchase a workshop ticket that includes an equipment pack within the ticket. This includes: • 1 Pasco Smart Cart (red) valued at $538 • 70mm Bench Pulley with Clamp valued at $22 Teachers begin by learning how to determine a value for gravity using 3 different methods to using both simple and advanced equipment. Newton's Second Law is then investigated to deduce the empirical relationship between force, mass and acceleration with an experimental setup that is easy to replicate in your own classroom. Next we examine static and kinetic friction with two methods to calculate the coefficient of static and kinetic friction. The fun continues with examining analysing the relationship between the angle of an inclined plane and the acceleration of an object. Then we move on to all things Momentum. We will explore how momentum can be investigated quantitively using both elastic and inelastic collisions. Finally we will examine the relationship between work, force and displacement. At Science with Mat Pty Ltd we are all about improving the way science is taught. Get your students engaged and with a clear understanding of the Fundamentals of Mechanics. Enjoy the thrill of the discoveries made throughout this course! REVIEW: "The hands-on aspect was fantastic, and then applying mathematical modelling and graphical analysis - really strengthening understanding as well as application of these concepts. As were the little take-away points regarding the fairly inexpensive equipment to use in the classroom." Rachel
