Research That Shapes Policy: Engaging With Government

When evidence isn’t enough: how can researchers help shape better policy? Research has a vital role in addressing society’s most pressing challenges. Yet short-term political pressures, populist rhetoric, misinformation and powerful competing interests can make it difficult for evidence to inform public decisions. For academics committed to improving policy, the question is how to act effectively in this environment. Where can your expertise make the greatest contribution? What relationships help research gain traction? And how can researchers help create the conditions for policy change? Join us to explore the challenges facing evidence-informed policymaking - and the opportunities for engaged researchers to respond. Discussion will focus on three areas: selecting problems, building relationships and developing processes for policy innovation. An opportunity to reflect on your own approach, exchange experiences and identify practical ways to strengthen the connection between research and public action.
