UTS Design: Canva, AI and the future of graphic design

Assuming AI hasn't orchestrated human extinction, what does the graphic design industry look like in 10 years? Join UTS Visual Communication alumni Jessica Faccin reflecting on her career designing digital products for Canva, the impact of GenAI on the design industry, and whether moral ambiguity is the skill designers need to survive the years ahead. Jessica Faccin is a Principal Product Designer at Canva, currently leading design for Canva Code; an AI-powered product that enables anyone to create responsive, interactive experiences. She led the design for emerging products at Canva, including Magic Studio, and Video, at a time when they represented new creative frontiers, translating then into intuitive experiences used by millions. Jessica also focusses on the craft across Canva’s design specialty, helping redefine how designers work with AI through stronger judgement and systems thinking. Zoë Sadokierski is a designer, educator and Associate Professor based at the UTS School of Design. Her practice-based research explores how visual storytelling can communicate the complexity of biodiversity loss (and other consequences of humans meddling in the natural world) through creative nonfiction, visual essays and anarchival collage. Her only deliberate experience with GenAI involved generating images of extinct dwarf emus that still haunt her. 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start Architecture Foyer is Level 5, directly behind the lifts UTS Building 6, 702 Harris Street Ultimo.
