Calling students in Years 9-12! Are you passionate about Australian democracy and keen to advance civics, citizenship and ethics education? Just 28% of Year 10 students passed the latest national civics assessment, and the trend is in decline. This means young Australians are missing out on the opportunity to understand how government works and how they can have a say in issues that affect them. It also raises long-term risks for trust and support for democracy. Increasing our education over three areas is essential to equipping young people to support stronger democracies in the future: • Civics - understanding how government works and how we can influence positive change • Citizenship - understanding how we can and should engage with each other in constructive, robust and respectful debate • Ethics - understanding our personal values, societal values, and how values should influence the decisions we make So, how should we teach civics, citizenship and ethics in schools, to make sure everyone has a fair chance to participate as a citizen in the future? Be part of the solution at: What Should Civics Education Look Like? A Youth-Led Conversation Date: Wednesday 11 November 2026 Time: 4:00-6:00pm Venue: Sydney Girls High School Professor Ros Dixon, constitutional law expert and co-director of the UNSW Resilient Democracy Lab, will discuss the work underway to develop strong civics, citizenship and ethics education in NSW – and seek input from students about what should happen next. We look forward to seeing you there!
