Full description from organizer

Vocal Ease explores Hildegard von Bingen and medieval Montserrat songs, blending choral music with saxophone improvisation and hurdy-gurdy. Vocal Ease invites you to a unique musical journey into the spiritual and sonic worlds of the Middle Ages, bringing together the extraordinary music of Hildegard von Bingen and the vibrant songs of the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a remarkable collection of medieval pilgrimage songs compiled at the end of the 14th century. Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) lived for 81 years in the 12th century — an extraordinary lifespan for her time. A Benedictine abbess, composer, poet, visionary, theologian and natural philosopher, she was one of the most remarkable women of the medieval world. She composed visionary sacred music, wrote influential theological works, explored the natural world and medicine, and corresponded with popes, emperors and other leading figures of her age. This special project brings Hildegard’s luminous and deeply expressive music into dialogue with contemporary choral works inspired by its spirit, themes and timeless beauty. Vocal Ease will be joined by the musicians: • Penelope Turner, a specialist in the performance of Hildegard’s music, will bring insight and authenticity to this extraordinary repertoire. • Cezariusz Gadzina, whose saxophone improvisations will create a spontaneous contemporary dialogue with medieval music. • Jerzy Burdzy, whose hurdy-gurdy and hammered dulcimer will add distinctive colours and textures rooted in early musical traditions. • Richard Craddock, whose beautiful baritone voice and charismatic presence will bring warmth and depth to our programme. The concert premiered at the 30th Early Music Festival in Radom, Poland, on 22 October 2026, marking the first performance of this special programme. As always, the evening will continue after the music with drinks, nibbles and an opportunity to meet the performers, exchange thoughts and share the experience.
