Korean Traditional Painting in Alter-age: Pure and Hybrid explores how the tradition of Korean painting has been inherited, transformed, and reinterpreted across generations. Bringing together 46 works ranging from the late Joseon period to the 20th century and the present day, the exhibition creates a dialogue between historical masters such as Jeong Seon, Kim Jeong-hui, and Jang Seung-eop and contemporary artists Song Ji-in, Choi Soo-ryun, Choi Hae-ri, and Hwang Gyu-min. At the heart of traditional literati painting were the practices of Mo (observing and learning), Im (following the masters), and Bang (developing one’s own artistic expression). Rather than simply following this established progression, contemporary artists rearrange, reinterpret, and reconstruct these practices, developing new approaches to the language of Korean painting. By placing works from different periods side by side, the exhibition reveals both the continuity of this artistic tradition and the diverse ways in which it continues to expand today. To mark the opening of the exhibition on 17 September, a curator from the Ilmin Museum of Art will specially join us from Korea to introduce the exhibition and guide visitors through the works on view. The guided tour will offer further insight into the exhibition’s curatorial concept, selected historical and contemporary works, and the connections between traditional methods and their reinterpretation by artists today. The exhibition is presented by the Korean Cultural Center Brussels in collaboration with the Ilmin Museum of Art and will be on view from 17 September to 13 November 2026. Special Guided Tour 17 September 2026 | 19:00 Korean Cultural Center Brussels Registration via Eventbrite Limited capacity — first come, first served. *No reservation is required to visit the exhibition.
