Join us in Lynden for Dave Benedict's moving true-story novel about a WWII pilot, soldier's mental health, and the power of kindness. Bill’s War is a deeply moving biographical novel based on the true story of Lt. Bill Gump, a young Army Air Corps pilot whose promising life was shattered by battle-induced schizophrenia during World War II. Told through Bill’s own recovered letters and a rich narrative, the story traces his struggles with mental illness alongside his family's journey to care for him, and the small Kansas town that embraced him with kindness. This haunting story offers a contemporary message about the power of everyday human kindness and meeting the needs right in front of us. Dave Benedict lives with his wife, Martha, in Ferndale, WA. His degrees are from Washington State University (BA Communications), Seattle Pacific University (teaching credential) and Regent College, Vancouver, BC, Canada (MDiv). Dave has worked as a wildfire smokechaser, a cast director for a traveling musical show, a public-school teacher, and as pastor to congregations in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Washington state. Bill’s War is his first full length novel, and he is currently working on a memoir of his childhood on a remote Montana ranger station.
