On this cozy November evening, she’ll share the inspirations behind her original compositions in this unplugged performance and take you on a nostalgic musical journey of joy, home and storytelling. Ken co-produced, engineered and mixed Maia's 'Stories Untold' album, as well as accompanying her on many tracks, with vocal harmonies and a total of 10 instruments, including a washtub bass! Not sure if he'll be bringing the washtub bass to the concert, but one can only dream! “It’s been 9 years since my last album. I've finished recording, had CDs made, and streaming platforms are next. But, to me, one of the most meaningful goals of songwriting is to perform - to share my songs with a room of listening-ears and smiling eyes. I adore the community that’s created when an audience nods to lyrics in unison; lyrics that are personal, but that everyone feels.” - Maia About Maia Maia Waern is a Torontonian as well as a country girl. She grew up in and out of town. Her songwriting journey began as a child, singing originals in the backseat while travelling to and fro. The forest was her songwriting school, singing along with the birds as the rustling leaves and rushing river sang backup. Over the years, Maia leaned into the self-soothing nature of songwriting and discovered the joyfulness of the ukulele. She established music connections with her community through musical outreach like hosting uke jams and kids open stages, teaching ukulele to all ages (2-102), and busking at the farmers’ market on a blanket with many colourful ukuleles for the kids to try. 2020 paused the world, but Maia kept songwriting. Her 2020 album never made it into the studio, but her good-old songs waited patiently, and new songs kept coming. "The world needs to hear your new songs," said Maia’s uncle, Rick. Earlier this year, Maia’s ukulele took her by the folk songs and dragged her into Ken Whiteley's studio to record Stories Untold, her fourth album. Maia Waern’s Stories Untold is a musical tour through Toronto and into Ontario's countryside, venturing through the heart and past the memories that live there. Ken Whiteley’s multi-instrumental contributions lift Maia's songs up for a better view. This includes Market Waltz, which also features other farmers’ market pals – musician Richard Underhill (sax) and farmer/musician Rodrigo Venturelli (marimba). Maia’s plans, for the foreseeable future, include house concerts, the odd gig, a country & blues album, and putting chicken wire over at least some of the raspberries next year, so the squirrels don’t get them all.
