YORK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS "BRAHMS & SCHUMANN"

Join the York Symphony as we present a musical program featuring the Brahms Violin Concerto and Schumann's Symphony No.4. Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto is a monumental work composed in 1878 and premiered on January 1, 1879 with Joseph Joachim as soloist and Brahms conducting. Despite its rocky start, the concerto became a cornerstone of the violin repertoire. Joachim himself called it one of the four great German violin concertos alongside Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Bruch. The work is now so firmly established that it is considered a rite of passage for any world-class violinist. The concerto stands as a great musical pillar near the end of the 19th century, counter-balancing the pillar of Beethoven's great violin concerto from the beginning of the century. "That Brahms should have ventured upon a Violin Concerto in D with the sound of Beethoven's....in his ears was in itself an act of faith and courage; that he should have produced one....worthy to stand beside it, is one of the triumphs of Brahms's genius." Schumann's Symphony No.4 is a testament to his innovative approach to symphonic writing. Unlike traditional symphonies, Schumann defies conventional forms, opting for a more organic and interconnected structure. The symphony presents a continuos flow of musical ideas, with themes and motifs reappearing and undergoing transformation throughout the different movements. The Symphony No.4 stands as a powerful reflection of Schumann's own struggles with mental health and the complexities of human emotions. The music is deeply introspective, traversing a range of moods from darkness to light, from turmoil to triumph. Schumann's ability to convey the depths of human experience through his music is a testament to his profound understanding of the human condition. The York Symphony welcomes violinist Oliver (Zihuan) Xu, co-winner of the YSO concerto competition, to perform the Brahms concerto.
