Project Profile: The William Hawrelak Park Rehabilitation project is a major renewal initiative undertaken by the City of Edmonton to revitalize one of the city's most iconic river valley destinations. The project addresses aging park infrastructure, buildings, public amenities, and landscape systems while enhancing accessibility, sustainability, safety, and long-term operational performance. A key objective of the rehabilitation was to preserve the park's character while modernizing infrastructure that had reached the end of its service life. The design team worked together to address complex existing conditions, limited historical documentation, heritage considerations, accessibility requirements, and long-term maintenance needs. Extensive investigations and assessments were completed to inform design and construction decisions. The project was delivered through a highly collaborative team led by MBAC Architects as the prime consultant, with Entuitive providing structural engineering and building envelope consulting services, Chandos Construction acting as Construction Manager, and a broad team of civil, landscape, geotechnical, and specialty consultants. The project serves as an example of successful interdisciplinary collaboration, with the owner, architects, engineers, contractor, and specialty consultants working together to renew critical civic infrastructure and create an enhanced public experience. Through this partnership, the rehabilitation extends the life of existing facilities, improves park functionality and accessibility, and helps ensure that William Hawrelak Park remains a premier destination for Edmonton residents and visitors for decades to come. Presenters: Mohammad Moayyed M.A.Sc., P.Eng., MCSCE | Principle Mohammad is a Principal at Entuitive with extensive experience leading complex projects across various sectors. He specializes in complex structural engineering challenges, including major renovations, rehabilitation of existing and heritage facilities, large-scale public infrastructure projects, and technically demanding new construction. He led the structural engineering team and worked closely with MBAC Architects, and the other project team to address complex rehabilitation challenges. He helped in delivering innovative solutions for aging infrastructure, heritage facilities, waterfront structures, and landscape elements while balancing design vision, constructability, durability, and long-term performance. Mohammad began his career in Canada in 2007. After completing his M.A.Sc. degree at Dalhousie University in 2010, he spent several years practicing structural engineering in Atlantic Canada before relocating to Edmonton in 2013. Since joining Entuitive in March 2016, he has played a leading role in establishing and expanding the firm's presence in the Edmonton. Tim Smith Architect, AAA, AIBC, OAA, MRAIC | Partner Tim is a Partner at the marc boutin architectural collaborative inc. (MBAC), a Calgary-based architecture and urban design firm known for its public-sector and civic work across Western Canada. Tim is a Registered Architect in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, and a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He served as the architectural lead and project manager on the William Hawrelak Park Rehabilitation. He provided oversight to align design intent with servicing, access, and operational logistics, supporting delivery through a phased construction sequence. Tim joined MBAC in 2017 after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the University of Alberta, further studies in Visual Arts at the University of Calgary and the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Architecture at the University of Toronto. As a partner at MBAC, his focus is on broadening the firm's reach through new project types and client relationships, alongside a range of design research initiatives.
