Mi’kmaq and Yiddish Music in Conversation An unprecedented collaboration brings creators of new Yiddish and Mi’kmaw music together on one stage. Mi’kmaw songwriter and fiddler Morgan Toney and his ensemble, whose Juno Award-winning music brings together the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton with the songs of the Mi’kmaq in a fusion he calls Mi’kmaltic (Mi’kmaq + Celtic). Montreal-based klezmer band Yene Velt String Ensemble and Burial Society, who present violin and tsimbl instrumentation drawing from a repertoire of 100-year old recordings, manuscripts collected by travelling folklorists, and original compositions. King’s alumni Rachel Kimmelman and Lucas Tennen, who transform Yiddish dance into a distinctly modern art form that invites all people to connect with ancestral traditions. Award-winning Halifax violinist and educator Gina Burgess, shaped by the vitality of both Jewish and Indigenous musical traditions, whose musicianship embodies the possibilities of cross-cultural connection here in Halifax/Kjipuktuk.
