Outdoor Skills Day + Overnight Camp

Orienteering, fire and shelter, a guided hike, then a night at camp. Take the full Deluxe weekend or book one course. One day. Three skills that matter outdoors. Then a night at camp to put them to work. Find your way with a map and compass. Build a tarp shelter and light a fire when the woods are wet. Read the forest on a guided nature hike. Then stay the night at Blue Springs Scout Reserve in Acton, with a barbecue dinner, bannock over the fire and a continental breakfast in the morning. Everything is hands-on. No lectures in a classroom and no watching someone else do it. Two ways to join Deluxe, $230: all 3 courses ($170 separately) plus the overnight camp for $60 more. The camp is only available with Deluxe. Single courses: Orienteering and Map Reading Level 1 $65, Fire and Shelter $65, Hike $40. What you will learn Orienteering and Map Reading, Level 1: the parts of a compass, how to take and follow a bearing, how to read a topographic map and contour lines, and how to use map and compass together on a hands-on navigation course. Fire and Shelter: read a site for hazards, rig a tensioned ridgeline with the right knots and lashings, and pitch a tarp two ways. Find dry fuel in a wet forest, light a fire with a ferro rod, and put it dead out. Hike: 90 guided minutes on the trail, identifying local plants and trees, spotting tracking signs and reading the terrain. Overnight camp, Deluxe only: set up camp with instructors on hand, share a barbecue dinner, enjoy bannock and pie-iron desserts at the fire, and join an optional night hike. Your guides stay at camp overnight. Also bring: tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad, headlamp, and warm sleep layers. Spring nights can get cold, so pack for cool temperatures. Bring bug spray and do a tick check after the hike.
