AMC 12 Math Contest

Write the AMC 12 right here in Waterloo! Two sittings, Nov 5 and Nov 13, for students in Grade 12 or below. Only 10 seats available. The AMC is where the road to the USA Mathematical Olympiad begins. We're hosting both sittings of the AMC 12 at Eastbridge Academy for our own students, and we have a few seats left over, so we're opening them up to any student in Grade 12 or below. • 25 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes, no calculators • Run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the American counterpart to the CEMC and CMS contests • A score of 85 or more on the AMC 12 qualifies you for the AIME on February 5 or 6, the next step toward the USA Mathematical Olympiad • Canadians are welcome all the way up: eligibility depends on attending school in the US or Canada, not on citizenship, so you can go as far as the AIME and the USAMO Why are there two dates? The MAA runs the AMC 12 twice every fall: the AMC 12A and the AMC 12B have the same format but different questions, and each is written on its own date. You can write whichever one suits your schedule, or both for a second chance. You only need to reach the AIME score on one of them, so it's your better mark that counts toward qualifying, and a weaker sitting won't count against you. Putting together university applications? AMC 12 scores, and especially an AIME qualification, are among the math results admissions offices recognize best (particularly in the US), and they come out in mid-December, in time to add to an application. How to register 1) Pick up a ticket here for each sitting you want to write. 2) We'll email you the MAA's registration link for that sitting. The MAA asks a parent or guardian to complete it (or you, if you are 18 or older). 3) We approve you on our MAA roster, and you're all set. Everyone who writes with us is also invited to the take-up in our Grade 11 & 12 Math class the week after each sitting, where we go through the problems and solutions together: Wednesday, November 11 for the 12A and Wednesday, November 18 for the 12B, 5:00-7:00 PM. It's free, and you don't need to be enrolled. Preparing for contests like this one is a big part of what we do at Eastbridge Academy. Our Grade 11 & 12 Math class meets every week in a small group, working through contest-level problem sets (Fermat, Euclid, COMC, AMC 12) with students presenting their own solutions.
