About the Guelph Black Heritage Society The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) is a registered charity dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating Black history and heritage in Guelph and Wellington County. Established in 2011, GBHS maintains Heritage Hall, originally known as the British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church, built in 1880 by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who settled in the area through the Underground Railroad. Today, Heritage Hall serves as a cultural, historical, and community gathering place that honours the legacy and contributions of Black Canadians.
