This is creating unprecedented challenges and changes that will impact both nations. Dan will give us insights into how these tariffs and responses will affect businesses, travel and the future of both nations, economically and otherwise. Where is US trade policy heading and what does that mean for Island business owners? U.S. tariffs, efforts to bring manufacturing home, and pressure to reduce reliance on China are reshaping the choices facing Canadian businesses. But can these policies achieve their stated goals—and where do they leave firms on Vancouver Island? On October 1, economist Dan Ciuriak joins Victoria Entrepreneurs Organization to examine the technological and economic forces driving U.S. trade policy. He will explore the impact (and limits) of tariffs, the challenge of containing China, and the opportunities in the emerging alternatives for Canada, including closer links between Europe and Pacific trade partners, the growing ties to Europe, and the roll-out of the Carney Doctrine for Canadian economic development. The discussion will bring these global shifts back to the decisions Island business owners face about markets, supply chains, and future growth. Bio: Dan Ciuriak is a senior fellow at CIGI, where he is exploring the interface between Canada’s domestic innovation and international trade and investment, including the development of better metrics to assess the impact of Canada’s trade agreements on innovation outcomes. Based in Ottawa, Dan is the director and principal of Ciuriak Consulting, Inc. Dan is also a senior fellow with the C. D. Howe Institute, a distinguished fellow with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, a fellow with the Balsillie School of International Affairs and an associate with BKP Economic Advisors GmbH of Munich, Germany. Previously, he had a 31-year career with Canada’s civil service, retiring as deputy chief economist at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (now Global Affairs Canada).
