Full description from organizer

Join us for a beginner-friendly workshop and set the table this holiday season with your very own hand-printed kitchen linens. Over the course of two Sunday mornings, instructor Shelagh McKellar will share with you her passion for printmaking, a captivating artform with countless techniques and applications! Along with other beginners, you will learn how to carve your own stamps and print them on fabric to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind tea towels or napkins. The fee of $80 per person covers your admission to BOTH CLASSES in this workshop series on the following dates: • Sunday, November 1, 2026, from 9am to 11:30am • Sunday, November 15, 2026, from 9am to 11:30am PLEASE NOTE: Both classes are scheduled for 9am to 11:30am Pacific Time (without adjusting for daylight savings), but due to technical glitches with shifting to the new time zone, it may appear incorrectly until the new time takes effect on November 1st. COURSE OUTLINE This is a two-class workshop. During the first class, you will learn to carve your own design into a stamp using linocut techniques. The second class will cover the basics of fabric printing. You will gain insights on how to be safe while carving, clean up with the environment in mind, and source your own materials to continue your new hobby at home. At the end of the class, you will have several prints of your design on paper as well as either a set of tea towels or napkins. Class 1: Introduction to the world of printmaking, including a brief history and various different mark-making techniques. Discussion of design elements and advice from your instructor on your own design. There will be time to draw and adjust your design before carving. Transfer techniques where you learn how to get your drawing onto the carving matrix. Carving safety and technique. And finally, a brief introduction to printing where you get to test your linocut on paper. Class 2: You will get to dive right into fabric printing. We will cover the differences in technique between paper and fabric printing. Each student will get to choose between two tea towels or four napkins. SUPPLY FEE All materials will be provided for an additional $18 fee payable in cash to the instructor, including handouts, carving tools (for use during class), blocks, ink, and linens. MORE PRINTMAKING CLASSES Shelagh's workshops have been selling out quickly and we have her booked to teach another two-part printmaking class in the new year, so take a look and sign up while there are still spots available: Introduction to Multi-Block Linocut Printmaking Instructor: Shelagh McKellar Wednesdays, February 17 & 24 | 9am-1pm | Cost: $128 https://multiblockprintmaking.eventbrite.ca ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Shelagh McKellar is an artst who is inspired by the place where science, nature, and art converge. Through her work, she explores the meeting point of observation and imagination, capturing everything from the shadowed mysteries of the sea to the inquisitive charm of a gull waiting for a dropped crumb. With a background in natural sciences and fisheries, Shelagh loves to weave Latin nomenclature and anatomical details of marine flora and fauna into her art. These elements reflect her enduring fascination with the intersection of science and creativity, and her profound respect for the living world. Shelagh's medium of choice is linocut printmaking — a lovingly laborious process where each design is carved, inked, and burnished individually, resulting in subtle variations that make each piece truly one of a kind. This is slow art for intentional living! www.norwesterprints.com CLASS LOCATION This workshop is hosted by the Arts & Culture Colwood Society at the Goldfinch Arts Centre, a bright & modern gallery space that looks out to the Esquimalt Lagoon and the Colwood Waterfront beyond, where you will be surrounded by original artwork by local artists in a pottery exhibit called A Well Clayed Table, which runs from October 22 through November 15.
