Intro to Oil Painting

Itching to go back to school this fall? Sign up for this 6-week in-depth introduction to oil painting and start on the right track! This stress-free intro to oil painting course is designed to take beginners from understanding basic materials to completing a minimum of three fabulous oil paintings. Over the course of six weeks, the instructor will provide a structured, step-by-step approach to cover the following topics: • Art supplies & materials and how to set up; • Colour theory and mixing; • Values - a deeper understanding of lights and darks; • Brushwork techniques; • Fundamental painting techniques which include under-painting, alla prima and layering fat over thin paint; • Composition and observation. The fee of $​240 per person includes your admission to ALL SIX CLASSES in this workshop over consecutive weeks on the following dates: • Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 9am-11:30am • Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 9am-11:30am • Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 9am-11:30am • Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 9am-11:30am • Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 9am-11:30am • Thursday, November 12, 2026, from 9am-11:30am SUPPLY LIST • Canvas Pad - min 11x14” to max 16x20”, highly recommend the larger size • Paint Brushes - bristle or synthetic bristle, best deal is buying a package of 3-5 or more. We will be using mostly flats and filberts, small 1/4”, medium 1/2”, 3/4” and 1”. Don’t stress, I will bring extra brushes on our first session. (Michaels’s has the best deal on packages of paint brushes with coupon) • Palette knife - medium size • Oil Colours - best deal is to buy a basic set (8-12 colours of 37ml small tubes, these sets include your basic primary colours plus white) • Small container of Odorless Mineral Spirit (OMS) or odorless paint thinner. (Michaels has best deal with coupon) • Two small empty containers • A palette or a pad of disposable palette paper (Dollar Store) • Paper towels. • One roll of white or green painting tape (Dollar Store) • Apron or overshirt, to protect your clothing • Pencil, easer and small notebook for note taking and small sketchbook for thumbnails drawings • A sense of humour! :) ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Deborah Czernecky, SCA, is an accomplished Canadian artist based on picturesque Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A passionate explorer of Canada's diverse natural beauty, Deborah's work is deeply rooted in her love for the outdoors and her dedication to capturing the country's vast and varied landscapes. Whether painting on location in remote wilderness settings or refining her work in studio, Deborah's art is inspired by the ever-changing light, seasons, and textures of nature. Known for her en plein air technique, she often paints directly within the environment, immersing herself in the scenery to bring a vibrant authenticity to each piece. Deborah holds a formal training in fine arts from institutions including St. Lawrence College (graduated with Distinction), the Mission Renaissance School (Old Masters Techniques), and Ottawa University. She has been an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists since 2009 and was featured in the 2018 Ducks Unlimited National Art Portfolio, a testament to national recognition.
