Jigsaw Printmaking, an introduction to multicolour linocut prints

Learn to create vibrant, multi-colour linocut prints using the jigsaw method. All skill levels welcome! During this 3.5-hour workshop, instructor Shelagh McKellar will share with you her passion for printmaking, a captivating artform with countless techniques and applications! Along with other beginners, you will learn the skills to source materials, design, carve, and print your own linocut blocks, and troubleshoot common printing issues. For this class, you will be carving one design, cutting it up into pieces, individually inking each piece, then putting them back together to create a multi-colour print. COURSE OUTLINE • Introductions and overview of class topics • Design elements that work well with linocut and jigsaw specifically • Discuss positive vs. negative / carve out vs. carve around • Direct transfer method from paper to block • Carving Techniques • Printing intro & demo • Troubleshooting common printing issues • Clean-up: how to be environmentally aware with printmaking SUPPLY FEE All materials will be provided for an additional $10 fee payable in cash to the instructor, including handouts, carving tools (for use during class), blocks, ink, and paper. Please take a few minutes to ponder 2 or 3 colour designs you might like to carve. Remember that simple is key! We will discuss design elements that work well with this technique in class, but you are encouraged to bring a sketch, or some ideas with you, so we can have more time for carving and printing. With a background in natural sciences and fisheries, Shelagh loves to weave Latin nomenclature and anatomical details of marine flora and fauna into her art.
