About this event

MOTHERMARY, an art pop project by twins Elyse and Larena, performs at the Vinterjazz Festival.

Full description from organizer

MOTHERMARY: MOTHERMARY makes retro-futuristic Art Pop that refuses to behave. Named after the mother of Christ — the ultimate symbol of religious hypocrisy and the impossible expectations placed on women — the bicoastal project is the brainchild of identical twins Elyse & Larena, who grew up in a strict Mormon family in Missoula, Montana, the youngest of nearly a dozen children. "It was our world... our paradigm," Larena says about those days. "We were brainwashed." Elyse was the first to escape. After leaving the repression of religion and experiencing similar barriers in the music industry, she taught herself music production. "I wanted to have control over the sound. TOTAL control." Larena followed suit, left the church, and rejoined Elyse in NYC. Creating music together became a form of therapy. A way to process what they'd survived — the guilt, the shame, the manipulation disguised as devotion. The sound Elyse and Larena have created is extremely specific. The contrast of light and dark — exquisite, ethereal vocals against gritty, propulsive instrumentation — is a sonic representation of sisters who have always refused to be pinned down or defined. Their 2022 debut album I Am Your God (Italians Do It Better) was a dazzling baptism into the cult of MOTHERMARY, corrupting religious ritual while salvaging its beauty. The album garnered critical acclaim from Pitchfork, The Fader, Gorilla vs. Bear, Mojo, and Record Collector, establishing the twins as vital voices in the art-pop landscape. In November 2025, MOTHERMARY released Non-Duality , a 4-track EP that pushes their vision further. The title references the illusion of separateness — the false binary between sacred and profane, virgin and whore, suffering and beauty. It's an invitation to step into your own godhood. The EP's lead single "For You" comes with a music video that's equal parts pop art and passion play: a candy-colored, campy meditation on how we've aestheticized Christ's crucifixion for centuries. "Churches worldwide display this moment of absolute horror to inspire devotion," Elyse explains. "We're just pushing that distance from reality even further." The "For You" music video was selected for the SXSW Film Festival, screening alongside works by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Diplo. Non-Duality prepares listeners for MOTHERMARY's anticipated sophomore album Outer Darkness , slated for 2026. Having recently supported AFI, Metronomy, Neon Indian, Twin Shadow, The Last Dinner Party, Desire and more on tour, the sisters are gearing up for a Fall 2026 tour to bring their "engrossing sacrilegious spectacle" to stages worldwide. MOTHERMARY's sound has found its way onto screens and runways alike: their track "Give it Up" was featured in a Louis Vuitton commercial, while their music has soundtracked Netflix's Locke and Key and Elite , Showtime's Hightown , and the award-winning Sundance film Twinless . The duo has graced stages at Pitchfork Music Festival Berlin and Paris's prestigious La Gaîté Lyrique, cementing their presence in the international art-pop scene. Welcome to the cult of MOTHERMARY. Their vision for the future isn't merely a god complex, though they do enjoy powerplay. It's about women reclaiming their holiness and inviting you to acknowledge your own. "We want to rewrite the story of Mother Mary," Larena says. "She was never a virgin, she was a powerful sexual woman."
