Nature Prints: Intro to Lino Printing

Join artist Frances Daws for a fun, informative, hands-on introduction to the art of Lino Printing You will learn how to design, carve and print your very own piece of handmade art with expert teaching in the relaxed, welcoming environment of Discerning Palette Gallery. Bring your own ideas and images to work from or use the inspiration provided in the workshop, Frances will also provide a selection of images and botanicals to help you create a folky nature inspired piece. Demonstrations will be given on how to design and transfer your design to Lino, how to carve an image, achieve variety in line and detail and how to ink up a lino well for a strong even print. You will use a printing press to print your image with a selection of handmade and printmaking papers to try. You will be creating a one colour print but will also have a chance to be creative by introducing colour with the method of chine-collé, the layering of thin coloured papers. Who is this course for? The course is suitable for adults who are complete beginners or those wishing to refresh their previous skills in printmaking. You don’t need to be good at drawing, plenty of support will be given. Come for the cosy, creative, fun experience. What to expect • The workshop will be 2.5 hours long with hot drinks and snacks available. There is also a toilet on site. • We will be working with caligo safe wash inks, these inks are oil based but washable with soap and water. Wear suitable clothes, you can bring an apron should you wish, gloves and some aprons will be available should you need them. • You will go home with your carved lino print and finished piece plus information for continuing the craft at home. • Thornbury is a lovely market town with plenty of shops and restaurants there are car parks a short walk from the gallery, an email will be sent out closer to the workshop with how to find us and any additional information. • The nearest car park is St Mary's - which is free after 6 pm. Running the workshop Frances Daws is an award winning Artist from Wiltshire, who works across painting and printmaking. She studied her BA in Fine art in Falmouth and has since exhibited her work through Galleries, art fairs and Art trails. Alongside her own practice she has over 6 years in workshop experience and enjoys the teaching side as much as creating her own work. Age Requirements This workshop is designed primarily for adults, but young people aged 12 and over are very welcome to attend when accompanied by a responsible adult. As we will be using lino-cutting tools, which are sharp, anyone under 18 must remain under the supervision of their accompanying adult throughout the workshop and follow the tutor's safety instructions. Both the young person and accompanying adult will need to book a place on the workshop and participate in the session. Unfortunately, we're unable to accommodate children under the age of 12 at this workshop. Cancellation & Refund Policy We completely understand that plans can change. If you can no longer attend your workshop, please let us know as soon as possible. Cancelling your booking If you cancel at least 7 days before the workshop, you can receive a full refund of the ticket price. If you cancel less than 7 days before the workshop, we are unfortunately unable to offer a refund, as materials may already have been purchased and your place may be difficult to fill at short notice. However, please do get in touch. Where possible, and subject to availability, we may be able to transfer your booking to another workshop date. Transfers are offered at our discretion and cannot be guaranteed. You are also welcome to transfer your ticket to another person if you are unable to attend. Please contact us beforehand so that we can update the attendee details. If we need to cancel or reschedule a workshop Very occasionally, we may need to cancel or reschedule a workshop due to circumstances such as tutor illness, severe weather, insufficient bookings or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If this happens, we will let you know as soon as possible and offer you the option to transfer your booking to another suitable workshop date. If the alternative date does not work for you, you will receive a full refund. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop if the minimum number of participants required for the session is not reached.
