Tyrannosaur evolution, behaviour, and biomechanics

Tyrannosauroids remain among the most intensively studied extinct vertebrates and the most iconic dinosaurs in popular culture. Dr. Andre Rowe of the University of Bristol Earth Science's Department will be talking aboutTyrannosauroids. They remain among the most intensively studied extinct vertebrates and the most iconic dinosaurs in popular culture. Their fossil record is rich, with numerous well-preserved specimens—including nearly complete skeletons of Tyrannosaurus rex—providing an unparalleled opportunity to investigate their evolutionary history, behaviours, and biomechanics. Recent discoveries of new genera, alongside cutting-edge analytical techniques, have reshaped our understanding of the clade’s origins, growth dynamics, and ecological roles. Phylogenetic studies continue to refine tyrannosauroid relationships, revealing their evolutionary roots, diverse morphologies, and wide range of body sizes. Biomechanical approaches, such as finite element analysis and musculoskeletal modelling, have provided insights into bite forces, locomotion, and feeding strategies, shedding light on how these animals functioned. Furthermore, studies of CT-scanned brain endocasts, sensory capabilities, and pathologies offer glimpses into their behaviours, intelligence, and intraspecific interactions. This talk provides a broad synthesis of tyrannosauroid research, highlighting recent advances, ongoing debates in the field, and my own work. By integrating evolutionary, biomechanical, and behavioural perspectives, we can better appreciate the complexity of these carnivores and their place in Mesozoic ecosystems.
