Nene Wetlands-'Behind the Scenes' Beaver Tours

Join us for a 'Behind the Scenes' tour of the Nene Wetland's beaver enclosure to find out what the Nene Wetlands beavers have been up to! Beavers were hunted to extinction in Northamptonshire around 400 years ago but are now back, thanks to this exciting reintroduction project in the Nene Wetlands nature reserve. Known as 'habitat engineers' because of their ability to change their environment to better suit their needs (improving it for other wildlife in the process), they have already had a significant impact within their 18 hectare enclosure. Join us on this 'small group' tour into the enclosure (usually out of bounds to the public) and get a fascinating glimpse into the hidden world of our beaver family. We will meet at the visitor centre for refreshments and a brief talk about the history of beavers in Britain, the impact they can have on freshwater habitats and how we brought beavers back to the Nene Valley. We'll then head into the beaver enclosure itself to see what they've been up to. We will finish the walk by spending a bit of time looking for the beavers themselves as they emerge for the evening. However, please note that they are very unpredictable and therefore we are unable to guarantee sightings. Please be aware that we will be walking approximately 1-2 miles through the beaver enclosure where the ground may be wet and uneven and the vegetation may be long. Therefore a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required and we highly recommend that you wear closed in boots/shoes, long trousers and sleeves and wear insect repellent. This event is scheduled to run for 2 hours, however, it does occasionally overrun. This event is suitable for ages 11 years+.
