Join us for a free tour of Bangor New Cemetery. Join the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for a free tour of Bangor New Cemetery, led by one of our experienced volunteer tour guides. What3words cemetery location //flash.scope.staple Please note this is NOT Bangor Abbey Cemetery or Clandeboye Cemetery Bangor Cemetery has 51 First and Second World War casualties from all three armed services and the Merchant Navy. During the tour, you will also learn a bit about the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and our work, how to recognise a CWGC headstone easily, and understand the information and symbols on it. You’ll also learn about some of the casualties, including the stories of two young men from Bangor who were former members of the town’s Air Cadet Squadron, one of whom won the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. The tour lasts approx. 60 mins and covers about 500 metres on paths and grass on uneven ground and is on a hill which is steep in places. Not suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is not available within the cemetery but can be found in the surrounding streets. People with mobility issues can be dropped off at the cemetery shelter. Newtownards Road is extremely busy, please take care when crossing, there is a safe crossing point opposite the entrance. If you don’t wish to walk up and down the cemetery hill, you can remain in the shelter, and the tour guide will interact with you while others are on their self-exploration. There are on site toilets on site. Please bring water if required. Please come dressed for the weather and in suitable footwear. Only assistance dogs are allowed in the cemetery. Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.
