The '90s + '00s saw the rise of Bhangra bands like Alaap, Apna Sangeet and Heera and the emergence of Panjabi MC, Jay-Z's hit single 'Beware of the Boys' as well as Malkit Singh and Stereo Nation. It was a time when the mainstream was dominated by British South Asian culture and a time when many of the biggest names in hip-hop and bhangra were coming together in perfect harmony. Legends like Truth Hurts, Raki, Erick Sermon, Redman, and Kanye West were embracing Bollywood while home-grown stars like RDB, Dr Zeus, B21, Tigerstyle, Juttla, Surinder Rattan, Metz and Trix were releasing iconic anthems of time. Bally Sagoo, Cornershop, Apache Indian and The Rishi Rich Project featuring Jay Sean and Juggy D dominated the UK charts and Wolverhampton-born Jas Mann’s ‘Spaceman’ hit the number one spot in the UK Singles Chart. The 90s also saw the rise of The Asian Underground movement; Talvin Singh, Joi, Nitin Sawhney, State of Bengal, M.I.A, UK Apache, Basmarsh and Shri were making waves and pushing out boundaries in music. Madonna donned Henna, Gwen Stefani rocked a bindi and East is East introduced us to a new catchphrase: 'You bloody basta£%!!!!'
