Carve a Spatula from a log

A relaxing introduction to working with greenwood, using traditional tools and skills to carve your utensil from a recently harvested log. Experience the pleasure and satisfaction of using traditional hand tools to carve your very own spatula from a log recently harvested from our own woodland. The word 'spatula' first appeared in the English language in the 1520's, but their use goes back many hundreds of years and probably pre-dates the bronze age! In fact, if you get a chance, pop into Vindolanda Roman museum where you can see a number of spatulas that are just the same is we make today! This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood burner will keep us toasty warm on the coldest of days. As with all our courses we can arrange a private booking for an individual or small group on an alternative date, and can tailor the course to accommodate children from 9yrs and up. Please just get in touch. What you need to know This course is suitable for anyone 18years+ with an interest in learning a little about the thrills of working with greenwood, no previous wood-crafting skills necessary. Young people age 12 – 17 are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult who is also a paying participant - please get in touch if you have any questions. Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. Basic refreshments will be provided on the day, and you can make use of the Applestore café.
