Dock Museum Finds Day

Meet with your local Finds Liaison Officer to discuss identifying and recording your finds. Have you found something archaeological? You may be a metal detectorist, or just someone digging in the garden. We can examine your finds, as long as they are portable (something you can carry) and have been found, rather than purchased. Appointments are 20 minutes and we can: • Take in objects for identifying and recording • In some cases, 'spot-record' a maximum of 5 items • Return objects that we have borrowed • Provide information on recording with the Portable Antiquities Scheme Depositing finds • Label your finds with the findspot (National Grid Reference or What3Words), date of discovery, and any relevant reference numbers. • Bring finds in a small, clear box or bag, such as a crystal or takeaway style box or a gripseal or sandwich bag. • If we take in an object for recording, we will give you a 'pink slip' that acts as a receipt, and return it after three months. • In a small number of cases, we might advise you that an object needs to be considered under the Treasure Act. If so, we can explain this process and answer any questions. Collecting finds Please bring either the pink slip we gave you when we took them in, or official photo ID. We will not return finds without seeing one of these. If you do not have either, contact us at least a week before the event so we can discuss a solution.
