Tree Planting Experience Day - New Forest

Plant a tree on a small farm in the New Forest - leave confident to replicate it at home. Add a glamping stay before or after. On our tree experience day we'll disucss selection of species and the specific tree too, ground preperation; weed control and protection; what might or might not be needed for staking / guards; and aftercare through an establishment phase. We'll plant some trees in our estabslishing 'forest garden' and you'll leave having established a legacy, and confident to repeat for your own garden, or land. Book a glamping unit for the night before and wake up on site, or after and have a soak in a hot tub or sit by the fire the night after - extend your stay if you'd like a chance to explore the New Forest. When people first arrived on our northern european penisulla trees were the natural state of the land, of course we needed to clear some for dwellings and for crops, but it all got out of hand - we'd got down to under 5% cover by the end of the first world war, and thankfully have recovered to more like 14% now... but with pumping carbon into the atmosphere, and water running off our 'naked' land, we're in desperate need to put more back! Trees fix carbon, offer materails for building, are the golden ticket to water cycle restoration and produce wonderful fruit and other non-timber products. We highly recommend them! Planting a tree is a wonderful thing to do, and its tough to see how often poor species and specimen selection, or poor planting results in a tree that can just never thirive. On the other hand, a well selected tree can be found even for very small spaces and returns lifetimes of pleasure. The day is led by Lightfoot's Farm owner / operator Peter How, agroecologist with degrees in World Agriculture; International development and Environment. Peter has been a senior researcher at the Organic Research Centre; has planted over 40,000 trees; has worked in advisory roles and run projects for thousands of smallholders in far flug places like Afghanistan and Kurdistan.
