Pattern Play with Block Printing

Spend a day immersed in the world of block printing, colour and pattern with Aidan. You’ll be learning the hands-on process of creating your own printed textiles and creating your own printing stamp. Starting with creating a design, we’ll explore where to get inspiration and how to turn this into a design. You’ll discover how a design can grow into a pattern through block printing, learn to carve your own printing block and experiment with composition, colour and repeats. With a focus on play and process over perfection, this workshop is ideal for those looking for some creative freedom and a lot of fun. By the end of the day, you’ll have created your own piece of printed fabric, a handmade block to take home and the skills to keep experimenting. More than learning a new craft, it’s a chance to slow down and get absorbed in making with your hands to create something unique. Artist bio: Aidan Liggins is a textile artist and workshop facilitator exploring how creativity, traditional knowledge and making with our hands can help us rebuild a relationship with the natural world. Her work is rooted in simple awareness, using tactile processes such as block printing and botanical dyeing to explore the connections between people, materials and our natural world. This value in the act of making, runs through Aidan’s work and in no small part has been inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. Morris’s belief that there is a joy in labour, resonates with Aidan’s work as a block printer - a slow and traditional printmaking method. The print is created by repetition, block by block, allowing time and the maker's unique handprint to add to the design.Aiming to celebrate and tell the story of the handmade as a joyful antidote to fast consumption. Aidan is continually inspired by the natural world, drawing on folklore, seasonal knowledge and observation, bringing craft and craftsmanship back into our homes and cherishing the objects we live with again. About the venue Sunny Bank Mills is an inspirational cultural destination in the heart of the local community of Farsley, Leeds. Founded in 1829, these glorious Mills are being regenerated by the sixth generation of the family owners, creating a wonderful blend of work, leisure and culture.
