Lewes Food Banks Christmas Collection

Outside Lewes Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose all day. Saturday 12 December our Lewes Food Banks Christmas collection outside Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose all day. All day collecting - but nobody does more than a single one hour 'shift.' According to the charity Family Action: This Christmas 4 million children in the UK will be living in poverty – that’s 27% of all children* 20% of parents and carers have considered cancelling Christmas because they can’t afford it And almost 10% say they won’t be able to afford a Christmas present for their children this year. Familly Action was was founded in 1869 as the 'Society for Organising Charitable Relief and Repressing Mendicity.' Two centuries later why does a country boasting one of the wvorld's six richest economies tolerate a scale of child poverty which should have been abolished just thd same as Oliver Twist's chimney sweeping child labour? Shouldn't everything possible be done to reverse this human tragedy affecting millions of children in our society? Absolutely, yes But families in Lewes dependent on our town's food banks cannot afford to wait for politicians to catch up with the sheer scale of child food poverty in our country. So for now our Christmas food banks collection will help ensure no child in Lewes goes hungry over Christmas . During the day our collectors will provide shoppers with a shopping list of seasonal food essentials and treats. Our request to shoppers is to add just one additional purchase from our list to their shop and donate to the stall we'll have outside the stores. Added together this amounts to one huge total. Please register to collect for an hour on Saturday 12 December. Once registered we'll then be in touch with a rota. Click the 'get tickets' button to voluntee If you can't collect on the day do please donate every pound donated will be used to fund the items Lewes Food Banks have told us they need this Christmas in the greatest number. Click the 'get tickets' button and choose 'donation' we'll then combine these items donors have helped pay for with our collection. The all-day collection is distributed direct to the three Lewes food banks: Fitzjohns, Landport, Malling plus the Lewes Community Fridge.
