Sand Casting in Pewter with Anna Watson

Learn how to sand cast to create your own project in pewter This exciting process involves making and using sand casting moulds, melting and pouring pewter, finishing and polishing your design, and turning it into jewellery. First, a two-part sand casting mould is separated, sand is packed into one side, and an object is pressed into the sand to form an impression. The other half of the mould is then placed on top, and more sand is added and packed down. The mould is then opened and the object removed to reveal its impression in the sand. A pour hole is made and the two halves are reassembled. Molten pewter is poured into the hole to fill the cavity formed by the impression. After the metal has cooled and solidified, the mould is opened to reveal a pewter replica of the original object. The casting is then cleaned and finished to complete the process. Enough pewter is provided for you to make a few jewellery-sized objects. Feel free to bring jewellery-sized objects to cast such as screws, twigs, pills and curios. Some objects will also be supplied. For safety purposes, please wear a long-sleeved top and no open shoes when pouring the molten metal. This course is suitable for all levels. Anna Watson graduated from the University of Brighton with a First Class degree in Materials Practice where she specialised in woodwork and metal. For the past eleven years she has worked in the jewellery industry for commercial designers and artisan jewellers. Anna runs her own jewellery business where she designs work for shops and creates work for national and international exhibitions. In 2018 she did a residency in Athens and has since exhibited in Germany, Greece, Portugal and China. Anna particularly enjoys teaching and encouraging students to develop their designs and ideas.
