Full description from organizer

Is making money compatible with the Quaker principles of equality and sustainability? Come along and have your say! Britain became a much more equal society after WW2 but the gap between rich and poor has been widening since the 1980s, while people on middle incomes have also seen their wealth decline. One aspect of the problem has been the huge rise in house prices relative to earnings, leading to intergenerational inequality. This session will facilitate a discussion on whether wealth inequality matters in itself and, if so, what can be done about it. Quakers have a long history of trying to run ethical businesses, which included in the past Cadbury’s and Fry’s chocolate and Clarke’s shoes. Speakers from the Quakers will provide input on Quaker businesses, the pros and cons of a wealth tax and what the trade union movement may still have to offer.
